Decadent Chocolate Cake

This recipe makes the most delicious chocolate cake ever.  It has incredible depth of flavor and is very moist.  My family and I couldn't stop eating it and I am sure that it will be the same for you.  This is a pretty large recipe and I made it as a 2-layer cake.  However, it can easily be used as a chocolate cupcake recipe. 


  • 2 cups (4 sticks) butter
  • 2 cups hot coffee
  • 1 1/2 cups cocoa powder (use the highest quality you can find)
  • 4 cups flour
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/3 cup sour cream


 Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and set aside. In a small saucepan melt the butter and then take off the heat.  In another bowl add the cocoa powder and slowly whisk in the coffee until it is smooth.  Combine this mixture with the butter and allow to cool slightly.  

In another bowl combine the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.  Whisk to combine. In an electric mixer, beat the eggs and sour cream.  Add the slightly cooled chocolate mixture to the mixer and beat to combine.  Add the dry ingredients and mix on slow being sure not to over mix, but still making sure to get out the lumps.  Pour batter evenly between the two pans.  Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes.  Cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center of cake comes out clean.  Allow cakes to cool completely on a cake rack before taking out of the pans.
